Steel columns (either of standard section or of prefabricated, bespoke dimensions) can be inserted into rotary bored piles to support temporary and permanent loads. Plunged columns are used to support the ground floor (and intermediate basement) slab when ‘top down’ construction methods are adopted for basement construction. Plunged columns can incorporate shear studs and the connections required to make a structural joint between the column and subsequent basement and intermediate slabs.
Plunged columns are installed to a high degree of accuracy in plan and verticality, using specially designed and manufactured guide frames.
